Impacted areas could see a dusting up to two inches of snow, which could get heavy at times.

GREENVILLE (WSPA) – Tuesday is the first day parents can pre-register their children for 4-year-old kindergarten this fall in Greenville County.

The school district reports it has six child development centers and multiple schools that offer this service, but pre-registration doesn’t guarantee enrollment.

A district spokesperson says children selected for 4K programs must demonstrate academic/developmental needs and/or risk factors such as low family income and low parent education level.

Children will be screened in March and will be ranked district-wide. Those considered most at-risk for school success will receive initial assignments.

“The goal is to ensure that all children begin kindergarten on a level playing field,” said GCSD Director of Communications Beth Brotherton is a statement, “and that children who might not have access to private pre-school programs have the same level of preparedness as their peers.”

GREENVILLE (WSPA) – Most of the Upstate is under a winter weather advisory for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and the state’s largest school district is watching conditions to determine status for schools.

The Greenville County School District Director of Communications says leaders will try to make a decision on whether to open or delay schools on Wednesday by Tuesday evening.

“We will evaluate the timing of the possible storm and how it could affect travel conditions for buses and car riders in the morning,” said Beth Brotherton in a written statement.

The National Weather Serice has issued the advisory – from 10:00 pm Tuesday to noon Wednesday – for Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Laurens, Pickens and part of Oconee counties.

Brotherton says district leaders are consulting with with the National Weather Service, emergency preparedness officials, the Department of Transportation and law enforcement as they monitor the latest forecasts.

The district says it’s primary concern is for all students and staff along with students who travel across Greenville County to attend magnet schools plus teachers or staff who may not live close to the school where they’re employed.

District warehouses are preparing trucks with ice melt and plows to clear entrances, sidewalks and parking lots at schools. The district ICE team also travels bus routes to determine if there are any icy or dangerous spots.

NEWBERRY, SC (WSPA) – A man has been charged with 2 counts of attempted murder after dragging a deputy to the ground and hitting another with his SUV, according to Newberry Co. Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say Joshua Miles Mathis, 26, was fleeing a checkpoint after deputies found marijuana in his vehicle.

It happened on January 10 after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vincent St. and Giff St.

Mathis also hit a Newberry Police Officer who was at the checkpoint.

The report says the officer was able to evade the SUV and was hit with a glancing blow.

Both were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

The SUV sped away, but law enforcement was able to find it a short distance away.

They said Mathis had ran from the vehicle and they weren’t able to find him

The report says Mathis turned himself in on January 12 and was charged with:

Attempted Murder (2 counts)

His bond was denied.

Investigators says Mathis’ girlfriend, Titilayo Khadija Robinson, 25, was arrested and charged with Filing a False Police Report.

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – South Carolina Department of Transportation officials said an inside lane of Interstate 85 southbound in Anderson Co. has been closed due to bridge deck failure on the interstate at mile marker 14.2.

SCDOT officials said a large pothole, approximately 3 feet by 3 feet in size, was found in the bridge deck.

There were reportedly no issues with bridge support structures, just the deck surface.

The bridge is reportedly over Lake Hartwell and Three and Twenty Creek.

Repair work is expected to begin tomorrow, weather permitting.

“Until exploratory demolition work is accomplished to determine the extent of patching needed, we are unable to give a time frame for how long the closure will have to remain in place. Every effort will be made to get the repair completed and lane reopened as soon as possible.”

SCDOT asks drivers to use caution in all work zones.

CDC calls flu “epidemic” widespread

(WSPA) – We’ve told you this past week how almost all of the hospitals in our viewing area are restricting visitors because of the flu.

And data from hospitals across our area show the spike in just the last few weeks is undeniable.

Anmed Health in Anderson was the first hospital in the Upstate to restrict visitors, and with good reason.

Anmed says there’s been 484 positive flu cases in the last 7 days, compared to just 37 cases for the first nine days of January.

Today leaders at the CDC explained how this flu season is measuring up against past year.

“All of the states, 49 of them at least, are reporting in the same week widespread activity and from what I understand that hasn’t happened in the last 13 years and maybe hasn’t happen once in the past,” said Dr. Dan Jernigan with the CDC.

The agency says the South and the West are getting hit the hardest right now.

The most common strain coming back in recent lab test, H3N2, Is associated with more severe flu seasons.

“H3N2 viruses evolved more rapidly than other viruses,” said David Wentworth with the CDC.

That may explain why Greenville Health System is seeing a spike, in not just flu cases, but flu related admissions to the hospital.

Check out the data.

Last year in the first week of January, GHS had 390 positive tests with 13 admissions. This year, it had 1331 with 51 admissions that same week.

Spartanburg Regional had 70 cases the first week of January and it jumped to 138 the second week. Both are higher than last year.

The CDC recommends most patients get antiviral drugs. But with the surge in cases, there’s a growing risk of a shortage.

“We are working with manufacturers to address these existing gaps. And clinicians should consider advising their patients that they may need to call more than one pharmacy,” said Alicia Fry with the CDC.

Snow accumulates in WNC, road crews prepared

ASHEVILLE, NC (WSPA) – North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Tuesday as a second widespread winter storm hits the state in less than a month.

“I like the snow,” said Burnsville native Tyler Sanders, who we met in downtown Asheville. “It’s cold. It’s nice. It’s beautiful.”

For Northeastern transplant David RAHN, he’s had his fare share of snow over the years.

“Lived in Manhattan for 20 years and from Princeton New Jersey,” said Rahn. “It’s great as long as you don’t have to get in the car and drive around.”

The North Carolina Department of Transportation tells 7 News, roads in Western North Carolina got pre-treated with salt Tuesday or already had a layer of salt from the previous winter weather event.

“We salted Saturday for the ice after the rain,” said NCDOT Henderson County Maintenance Engineer Roger Ayers. “We will be working 24 hours a day until we know that all the roads have been cleared.”

Going into Wednesday, he said if temperatures remain low, that could create ice on the roads.

“We’ll be salt and sanding a lot of our roads if they turn to ice,” said Ayers. “If there’s an accident, we’re not allowed to get out there and treat it and it doesn’t allow the heat that’s built up in the tires of the vehicles to help us out on the roads so when they’re sitting the roads are getting colder.”

It’s dangerous conditions that everyone can help avoid.

“Take it easy,” said Sanders. “Don’t be in a hurry.”
